Independent Members for the Newham Design Review Panel
Newham is of increasing importance to London and the national economy and is at the centre of many of Europe’s most exciting regeneration projects – including the Royal Docks and the Stratford Olympic Legacy area. It is strategically placed to support the growth of housing and industrial capacity in the city and influence its economic and social evolution over the coming decades. Our Community Wealth Building Strategy ensures that new investment contributes to long-term prosperity, wellbeing and fairness for all our residents, and responds to the Climate Emergency. This means an approach to planning, housing delivery and regeneration that ensures Newham’s growth as an environmentally and socially sustainable borough.
Our Design Review Panel has a vital role, because every new development built and every place created has the potential to improve quality of life, contribute to the local economy and enhance the environment. Since we established the Design Review Panel in 2007 its members have diligently ensured that functional, sustainable and attractive buildings and places are delivered for Newham residents. We are seeking applications from leading built environment professionals and emerging talent, for Design Review Panel Members able to commit to approximately 5-7 full day meetings per year. The panel will consist of around 25 members, with four members typically attending each review. The areas of expertise that we are particularly looking for are listed below:
- landscape architecture
- environmental sustainability
- urban design
- inclusive (including child-friendly) design
- civil and structural engineering
- architecture
Successful candidates may have expertise and experience in a number of these areas, and will also have strong analytical skills, personal qualities of diplomacy and the ability to maintain a tone of constructive criticism.
Newham is perhaps the youngest, most diverse, and vibrant local authority in the UK. To reflect our population we welcome and encourage applicants from under-represented groups within the built environment professions. Remuneration is £450 per day/£225 per half-day exclusive of VAT. Travel expenses from within Greater London can be claimed.
